Brooklyns Unite for Feb. 21 ‘Slam Dunk’ Black History Event
A former NBA player-turned-activist is coming to Brooklyn Park for a Black History Month event.
The cities of Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center are hosting Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and screening his documentary “Stand” for a free community event on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Abdul-Rauf is an activist, author and former NBA player. He refused to stand for the National Anthem during basketball games in protest of racial injustice in the 1990s. The NBA suspended him without pay in 1996.
After facing public backlash and controversy, Abdul-Rauf uses his voice for advocacy. He gives speeches about his beliefs across the country and has now written a book about his experiences titled “In The Blink of an Eye: An Autobiography.”
“He took that challenge, he took that trauma that happened to him and turned it into a positive thing: speaking up for what he truly believed in,” said Dawn Stevens, who will be moderating the event.
A moderated Q&A session comes after the film screening. The audience will have opportunities to ask questions as well.
The film screening runs from 4:30-6:15 p.m. on Wednesday at the Community Activity Center’s Gardenview Room. The Q&A portion starts immediately after and goes from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m.
The event is free and will serve light refreshments.
The Community Activity Center is also hosting a Black History Month Showcase on Friday, Feb, 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are limited.
