Brooklyn Park Assisted Living Facility Reopens as 55-plus Housing
A longtime assisted-living facility in Brooklyn Park is reopening its doors as a 55-plus community.
Waterford Manor closed for renovations in September. It rebranded as The Waterford and has already opened its doors to its first resident.
The space is owned by Transforming Age, a nonprofit focused on affordable housing for older adults. This location is classified as an “active aging adult community.”
The Waterford opened under its original name back in 1999 as an assisted living and dementia care facility with nursing services.
Executive Director Alyssa Lauzon said planning began a year ago for a transformation, but the bulk of the remodeling happened over the last 60 days.
“It’s a relief. There’s a lot of excitement, there’s a lot of gratitude. It has been a privilege to see it from the start,” Lauzon said. “It’s exciting to be here and everything is in place. We have residents coming and touring, and being able to show a final product. I’m just excited for what future residents get to experience.”
The facility held a ribbon-cutting event Monday morning with Transforming Age leaders, council members and the Metro North Chamber of Commerce.
A Local Need
Mayor Hollies Winston attended the ribbon-cutting and said he and Council Member Shelle Page discussed the need for affordable 55-plus housing in Brooklyn Park.
“We’re excited about it, because it is hitting a need that we’ve been grappling with as a city,” Winston said.
One-and-two bedroom apartments are available with new appliances and air conditioning.
Lauzon said the last resident from assisted living moved out in early September. She said Transforming Age helped residents move to other assisted living sites around the area.
The Waterford, located on Louisiana Avenue, is on the same property as the Waterford Townhomes and the Waterford Estates.
Right now, there are 42 units in the senior living building. The third floor is not yet open, but once it is, there will be a total of 69 units.
The first resident moved in earlier this month. More will move in on Nov. 1.
