UPDATE: Brooklyn Park Public Works Director Arrested for Rape; Attorney Responds
A high-ranking Brooklyn Park city staff member was arrested for alleged sex crimes earlier this month.
Dan Ruiz, who has been public works director for the city of Brooklyn Park for a decade, was jailed in Georgia on Sept. 8.
According to jail records, he was arrested by the Atlanta Police Department on suspicion of rape, aggravated sodomy, false imprisonment and battery.
He made bail and was released from police custody on Sept. 17.
A spokesperson for the city of Brooklyn Park said he’s on leave.
“Ruiz is currently on [full family and medical] leave,” the spokesperson said. “City leadership is reviewing personnel policies to determine whether any city policies apply relative to this incident.”
Attorney Gabe Banks, who is representing Ruiz, issued the following statement:
“Mr. Ruiz, a native and longtime resident of Saint Paul, Minnesota, has worked for the City of Brooklyn Park for over 22 years, during which time he has dedicated his life to serving the residents of Brooklyn Park and the community at large. Mr. Ruiz is extremely disappointed in the city of Atlanta Police Department’s decision to arrest him surrounding false allegations involving an encounter he had with his wife and High School sweetheart of over 32 years while they visited Atlanta to celebrate their 26th-year anniversary. While Mr. Ruiz takes the allegations against him very seriously, he denies any wrongdoing and remains confident that his name will be cleared of all allegations through the judicial process. Mr. Ruiz loves his wife and their four children, and would ask that you respect their privacy as they handle this matter as a family.”
