Brooklyn Park Police DARE Officer Competes for School Grant
A Brooklyn Park Police DARE Officer is trying to bring in funds for one of the schools she serves.
Creating a sense of community that helps students learn is not simple. Especially when there’s a high rate of student turnover and 85 percent of the children are on free or reduced-price lunch.
“It’s a tough school,” said Officer Jennifer Foster. “All the little kids come up and there like, hi miss officer lady.”
She spends two days teaching fifth graders about the dangers of drugs. She volunteers in many programs, including one that helps to tackle food insecurity at the school.
The Brooklyn Park officer is so passionate about wanting to help the students that she entered a national contest. Foster is a top 15 finalist in the “aftermath why we serve” grant competition.
The contest asks officers how their jobs are impacted by the community they serve. Foster sent in a video.
The contest ends on August 4th. Click here to vote for Foster.
“I love my job. I take pride in the fact that my job is to teach and help youth and leaders how to make a good choice,” said the caring cop in the video.
Foster is the only officer from Minnesota in the popular vote competition. The top seven candidates will get a portion of $15,000.
“First, second, and third, get a little bit more,” explained Foster.
She says students at the school have a piece of her heart.
“Being an officer in this community, living in this community. I think that it’s important that we take care of each other. That’s what my job is, to help people out, and this is a great way to do it,” said Foster.
