Brooklyn Park Police Explain How to Avoid Package Thefts
Hundreds of years ago, the three wise men weren’t concerned about their gifts being stolen. But package pilfering is something to be aware of in 2018.
Since Oct. 5, Brooklyn Park has only had five reports of package theft. However, that could go up now that the holiday season has arrived.
“There’s a lot of on-line shopping that’s going on,” said Kimberly Czapar, Brooklyn Park’s Crime Prevention Specialist. “Unfortunately that also means a lot of packages are being delivered to homes and sometimes we may not even be there.”
Away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, thieves often pounce on packages that are delivered to empty houses in peaceful neighborhoods.
“This could create an easy opportunity for someone that wants to steal items,” Czapar said. “To take those items from your door step.”
Brooklyn Park Police tips
Brooklyn Park Police have some tips on how to prevent gift grabbing on your block.
“If you aren’t going to be home when your package is delivered, maybe tell a trusted neighbor that is home to take the package in for you until you do get home after work,” ” Czapar said.
Czapar also says that people should keep tabs on their packages by using various delivery options.
“Sign up for the tracking services that the delivery service may offer so that you know the status of your delivery,” she said.
Be the “eyes and ears” on your block
Experts say the bottom line is to be the “eyes and ears”on your block. If you think your package has been stolen, take action right away.
“You should probably call the delivery company and let them know that you didn’t receive the package,” Czapar said. “Certainly if you feel you were a victim of theft, please call the police department and file a police report.”
There’s no surefire way to prevent neighborhood theft, but Brooklyn Park police say it’s a good thing to be part of your neighborhood watch group.
