Brooklyn Park Mosque Rethinks Safety After New Zealand Shootings
The Brooklyn Park Islamic Center is a place those of the Muslim faith go to worship and be with family. In light of the recent terrorist attacks in New Zealand, local Muslims wanted to make sure they were doing everything they could to keep their community safe.
“One of the first steps that we took was having an officer come out and do an assessment, “says Nausheena Hussain, a board member of the Islamic Center. “We wanted to make sure that our property has safety measures in place. There will also be an active shooter training class. We want to have a plan in place in case anything like that were to happen.“
Personal Safety Training
The Brooklyn Park Islamic Center also took part in a personal safety training. An officer went over safety tips to help people secure their homes. The officer also shared tips on how to stay safe in public. A crime prevention specialist in Brooklyn Park says when the New Zealand attack happened, the first thing he did was check with mosques in the city.
“It’s just something that we do,” says Terry Dehmer, a crime prevention specialist from the Brooklyn Park Police Department. “We would do the same thing if there was an attack on a Catholic church or a Synagogue or a Baptist church. If we have someone like that in our community we want to make sure they are safe and that they know we are keeping an extra eye on them.”
Premises Survey’s
The Brooklyn Park police department offers free premises surveys for both businesses and homeowners. If you are interested in scheduling one, call the police department at 763-493-8222 and ask for the crime prevention unit.
