Brooklyn Park Lions Drum Corps Prepares for Nat’l Competition Despite COVID-19
Young musicians say the piece they are preparing for a national competition in Denver is about “peace, love and caring.”
The Brooklyn Park Lions Drum Corps will be competing in the “Spooktastic Buck Down.” Coaches say the kids have put in a lot of work to be ready.
“It is bringing tears to my eyes. They are ready. They come to practice, they show up and show out,” said Evelyn Stevenson, one of the coaches. “They better be ready for us.”
Coach Johnny Gurley says this routine is one of the most exciting routines they have done. The group has met to practice in an empty Crystal theater in order to be ready.
“This is our first time going to Denver, so we’re excited,” said Royonte Malone. “We practice so that when we do the competition, it comes easy for us.”
Practice might be tough, but the group enjoys getting together.
“All the people on Brooklyn Park Lions Drum team care about one another,” summed up Diamond Jones. “We grow together.”
