Brooklyn Park Godfather’s Pizza to Close Sunday as Owner Retires
Godfather’s Pizza in Brooklyn Park will serve its final slice on Sunday, March 22.
The business, owned by Roger Backstrom, has been delivering hot pies to Brooklyn Park for more than 40 years.
While its main draw is the pizzas they serve, Backstrom’s guidance built his restaurant up to become a community pillar. He employed high schoolers, supported athletics, and has donated countless hours to the people of Brooklyn Park.
Now, his neighbors are showing up to celebrate.
“It’s been just such a wonderful experience to get a feeling that some of the things that I’ve done have had a positive effect on other people,” Backstrom said. “It isn’t just about pizza, it’s about the people, it’s about interacting with the community. And really, that’s where the magic of this whole thing is.”

Roger Backstrom’s cousin gives him a hug. His family stopped by his business for a surprise visit on Wednesday. He’s closing his Godfather’s Pizza location on Sunday.
Backstrom’s been involved with the Brooklyn Park Godfather’s since he was 26 years old.
In 2008, Backstrom became the franchisee, and later bought the building.
Now, nearly 70 years old, he’s ready to pass the building on to another business.
The buyer, he said, plans to turn the business into a sports bar.
But, according to Backstrom, they will still sell pizza, among other foods.
He’s been busy this last week. Former employees, family members and community members have all stopped by for a few slices and to say goodbye.
Backstrom plans to spend his retirement traveling and spending time with his loved ones, particularly his kids and grandkids.
Though he’s retiring from being a business owner, it won’t be tough to find Backstrom in the city. He’ll still be working with the Brooklyn Park Lion’s Club.
He’ll also be honored at the Brooklyn Park Council meeting on Monday, March 23.
