Brooklyn Center Woman Looks to Honor Veterans With Rescued Flag Stars
While Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, may be the country’s holiday for recognizing those who’ve served, a Brooklyn Center woman is using the remains of tattered flags to show her appreciation year-round.
Rozalinda Sitler picks up old and damaged flags from local VFWs and Legion posts, then cuts the stars out and gives them to active service members and veterans.
Over the last three years, she estimates she’s given out 30,000 stars, which packages in plastic bags with a short statement of remembrance.
Sitler says it’s worth the effort to give a “warm-fuzzy” moment to those who have given so much.
“I think that everybody in the state who deserves one should get one,” she said. “So I’m slowly working at it. Because I think there’s a lot of people in Minnesota who deserve it.”
Sitler also gives the stars to police officers and firefighters.
