Brooklyn Center Vaccination Site Prepares for Next Round of Priority Groups
COVID-19 vaccination sites are expecting busy weeks ahead as the next priority group gets the green light. That includes one particular site in Brooklyn Center.
North Memorial Health has a primary vaccination site inside the former Target store, at 6100 Shingle Creek Crossing in Brooklyn Center. Staff at that site administer the COVID-19 vaccine to about 500-700 people per day. If you are age 65 plus, you don’t have to be a North Memorial member to get your shot there.
Paul Krogh, system director of pharmacy and infectious disease at North Memorial Health, said the state has reached its 70% target of vaccinating people who are 65 years and older. This means vaccination sites can invite the next priority group, which are people with high-risk conditions.
“Our demand was going down with 65-plus and now with these new groups it’s back up,” said Krogh.
Masking, Social Distancing Still Needed
Doctors says people should continue wearing masks and socially distancing after their final dose because only about 10% of Minnesotans have been vaccinated. Secondly, it takes two weeks for someone to build antibodies after the final dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Krogh said it takes up to 28 days to build antibodies with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Georgia Peterson, a resident of Columbia Heights, said she got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
“Relief, relief, its been very trying on everybody around and my family and everybody in the city,” Peterson said.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott encourages people to stay patient.
“Let’s stay the course, continue to work together and we will get through this together,” said Elliott.
Walk-ins cannot be accommodated at the North Memorial vaccination site. Community members should call 763-581-CARE (2273) to make their COVID-19 vaccination appointment.
