Brooklyn Center To Unveil New Crime Dashboard
Brooklyn Center is preparing to host a new crime dashboard on the city’s website.
The police department has been developing the dashboard since early 2022.
Officers unveiled the dashboard to the Brooklyn Center City Council this week.
Brooklyn Center Police Cmdr. Tony Gruenig said the program is “light years ahead” of what the city currently offers on its website.
“We think it’s going to be an outstanding tool to kind of show the crime in our city, to be as transparent as we can,” Gruenig said.
The police department set up the software to update the dashboard and map functions daily. Data in the dashboard will populate from police reports that have been processed by the police department’s records division.
Interactive features will allow users to compare crime statistics by neighborhood, day of the week or year.
Currently, the dashboard has data from 2021 to July 2023.
Gruenig said the department had to switch reporting systems in 2021 as mandated by state and national law. Since the system records different data points than the old system, the department started with data from 2021 as a baseline.
Police expect to have the dashboard live on the city’s website this week.
“This is pretty much a bulletproof site,” Gruenig said. “This is probably the sixth or seventh iteration of it.”
