Brooklyn Center To Celebrate World Refugee Day on June 22
Saturday is World Refugee Day. There will be an event to celebrate the occasion in Brooklyn Center.
Brooklyn Center-based CAPI USA, an immigrant-led nonprofit, is hosting an event at Centennial Park. While it is a day to celebrate and raise awareness of refugees, it’s also a chance for the community to get a look at the different cultures right next door.
“It’s just a really good time to share just the wealth and culture and diversity that refugees bring to the Twin Cities,” said Monique Hernandez, communications director with CAPI. “And just a reminder of our shared humanity.”
The festivities begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with the inaugural World Refugee Day 5K through Centennial Park. Registration is closed for the race and Hernandez said the turnout looks good.
After the 5K, festivities start in the park at 10:30 a.m. and go until 5 p.m. Hernandez said the fun is happening rain or shine.
The event includes a variety of food trucks, kid activities, cultural performances and a space for neighbors to connect.
More details about the celebration are available on CAPI’s website.
