Brooklyn Center Redevelopment Project Wins Opportunity Zone Funding
A future development in a Brooklyn Center opportunity zone got a moment in the spotlight at a conference Wednesday. The Minnesota Opportunity Collaborative hosted the Be Inspired Summit. It featured developers working on several opportunity zones. Opportunity zones are a government-designated area that could use some economic TLC.
The conference included a competition for money and access to fundraising opportunities. A future development called the Brooklyns Building competed. The building will be right next to the FBI headquarters in Brooklyn Center. The Brooklyns Building will focus on opportunities for immigrants.
“It sat vacant for 12 years,” said developer Mike Brady. “It’s a little higher crime rate in that area, and so we’re excited. Turning something that wasn’t, into something that’s a real benefit to the community.”
The Brooklyns Building was one of three grand prize winners and will get $7500 to pay for pre-planning expenses.
