Brooklyn Center Receives Report on Opportunity Sites
Brooklyn Center is working on development plans for two of its opportunity sites. The Brookdale Ford and Brookdale Square sites are ready for development. The question is, what should go there? The city hosted a number of public workshops to get ideas. At a recent meeting, the council heard a report on the findings of the workshops.
“We here in Brooklyn Center have been hit,” said Mayor Mike Elliot. “We were hit pretty hard by the economic crisis. So what happens here is we want to make sure it is truly benefiting our community.”
Among the highlights are walkable developments that attract people to them. That could include community and cultural centers. Participants also wanted to avoid gentrification. So they suggested emphasizing small businesses and housing suitable for all incomes. The council unanimously accepted the report’s findings.
