Brooklyn Center Honors World War II Veteran
The Brooklyn Center City Council honored a veteran this week ahead of his landmark birthday.
Don Halverson — a more than 60-year Brooklyn Center resident — is turning 101 years old on Feb. 24.
The Brooklyn Center City Council declared Monday, Feb. 12, “Don Halverson Day” to celebrate his birthday and commemorate his military service.
Halvorson is a World War II veteran. He served in Italy with the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division from 1943 to 1945.
His platoon had a casualty rate of more than 80 percent while fighting the Germans during the Battle of Monte Cassino.
After the war, Halverson settled in Brooklyn Center with his family.
The National World War II Museum says less than 1 percent of veterans from the war are still alive today.
