Brooklyn Center Firefighters Conduct Rare, Live Fire Training
Firefighters from several local departments including Brooklyn Center, Robbinsdale and Oak Grove got a rare training opportunity Monday.
Fire crews burnt down an empty home in Brooklyn Center, located on Brooklyn Boulevard near Willow Lane Park.
Brooklyn Center Fire Chief Todd Berg said the last time they had this kind of live training was about four years ago.
The City planned to tear down the home, but instead gave local fire departments the opportunity to use it for training.
About 50 firefighters are taking part in the practice. Firefighters say the departments get to practice crew management, putting out flames and building trust.
“This is prime example of how people work together on a team. They go in as three-person teams on a line to put the fire out and they gain the trust and respect of their fellow firefighter that they don’t always get an opportunity to work with all the time,” said Fire Chief Berg.
The training was split into two sessions on Monday.
Berg added that the Brooklyn Center Fire Department is hiring paid on-call firefighters.
