Breck School Plans for New Athletic Facility on Former Legion Property
After purchasing the Chester Bird American Legion Post in Golden Valley, Breck School is developing plans for a new athletic facility.
It’s part of a three-phase, 25-year plan for the school’s future.
Along with the new sports facility, Breck is aiming to reconstruct its middle school building.
The Golden Valley Planning Commission recommended the plan for approval on Monday.
Athletic Facility
The American Legion and Breck announced a real estate deal nearly a year ago that gives Breck ownership of the former Chester Bird post located at 200 Lilac Dr. N.
Since then, the Legion post has relocated to the former Red Lobster building at 8900 Golden Valley Rd.
When the deal was announced, Breck did not publicly identify a plan for the property’s future use.
However, it’s now clear that Breck plans to build an athletic facility, although its construction would likely come in the final phase of Breck’s 25-year plan.
The 47,300 square-foot facility “will serve as a central space connecting McKnight Stadium with upgraded baseball, softball, and multipurpose fields,” according to Golden Valley Planning Commission documents.
The school also aims to update its infrastructure and elevate many of its outdoor athletic fields to reduce the potential for flooding.

Middle School Rebuild
Breck is aiming to tear down and rebuild its middle school building.
“The current middle school structure remains largely unchanged from its original 1970s configuration and no longer meets the functional needs of the academic program,” said Golden Valley city staff in planning commission documents. “The new Middle School will occupy the same general location and a similar building footprint and increase in size from approximately 58,100 to 85,000 square feet. The plans provide for updated classrooms, collaborative learning areas, and flexible common spaces designed to support contemporary educational practices.”
In the earliest phase of construction work, Breck plans to upgrade its campus infrastructure, such as stormwater management and building mechanical services.
There are also plans to build raised walkways above some of the campus’s wetland areas.
Breck, which was founded in 1886, purchased its current home, the former Golden Valley Junior and High School campus, in 1980.
