BMX Bike Stunts and SWAT Demos All Part of Brooklyn Park Child Safety Camp
The world can be full of hazards for kids, which is why the Brooklyn Park Police Department brought back its annual safety camp on Aug. 26 and 27.
It’s partly a way for first responders to connect with kids and make safety lessons fun.
Police officers, mostly dressed in plain clothes, showed off drones, robots and SWAT tools.
“The kids definitely enjoy seeing the equipment that the police and fire officers use every day, it gets them excited,” said Brooklyn Park police officer Andy McComb.
McComb said officers get the chance to introduce themselves to kids and remind them that they’re human.
“It’s just a great opportunity for the kids to have an interaction with law enforcement and fire and EMS individuals in a setting where we’re not in our traditional roles,” McComb said.
Other lessons teach kids about internet safety, their mental health and first aid.
Meanwhile, a squad of high-flying BMX bikers taught the kids about their protective equipment before preforming stunts.
One of those stunts involved Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley.
Sitting on a ramp, a biker jumped Bruley, making his bike and the kids flip.
