Bills Aim to Make Golden Valley Intersection Safer
Local lawmakers are working on a bill that would make the Highway 55 and Douglas Drive intersection safer for pedestrians and bikers.
Rep. Mike Freiberg, DFL-Golden Valley, has authored a bill in the house to improve the Highway 55 and Douglas Drive intersection. Those improvements include adding bike lanes and sidewalks to Douglas Drive as well as building an underpass under Highway 55 and a roundabout on the frontage road south of Highway 55.
Freiberg says he’s crossed this intersection himself and it needs improvements to make it safer for everyone, including students living at the Perpich School for the Arts.
“The intersection is not a very good one,” says Freiberg. “A lot of students who go there take the city bus and city transportation. When they are dropped off, they have to go across seven lanes of traffic. That’s not a very safe intersection.”
The price tag for the intersection improvements is $6 million. Senators Ron Latz, DFL-St. Louis Park, and Ann Rest, DFL-New Hope, co-authored a similar bill in the Senate.
