Author Reflects on 1963 Birmingham Church Bombing in Brooklyn Park Visit
Lisa McNair, the sister of one of the four Black girls killed in the 1963 bombing of a Birmingham church, shared her thoughts and stories with students in Brooklyn Park on Tuesday.
“So many of the civil rights stories are not shared. You get Dr. King and Rosa Parks and the ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, but so many pieces are left out of this huge puzzle,” said McNair. “I know you in this area have had the George Floyd incident and I want to share that things like that have been happening, but we have to fight harder against racism.”
Even though McNair was born after her sister’s death, she says her sister always had a strong presence in her life. It’s why she wrote a book, titled “Dear Denise, Letters to the Sister I Never Knew“.
McNair shared her story with students from seven Osseo Area Schools in a morning session, followed by and afternoon event for Brooklyn Park city staff. McNair spoke at Hennepin Technical College in a community gathering on Tuesday night.
