Aquifer Kits Delivered to Schools for Groundwater Awareness Week
Sunset Hill Elementary School received a one-of-a kind educational tool to help students better understand groundwater science.
The Minnesota Water Well Association (MWWA) donated and delivered 180 Awesome Aquifer Kits statewide for Groundwater Awareness Week.
MWWA hopes the event will foster interest in groundwater science. The event is also a platform to encourage yearly water well testing and well maintenance to prevent waterborne illnesses.
Sunset Hill teachers say students will use the kits to simulate different types of groundwater models in class.
“One thing they cannot see is what’s happening inside the surface of the ground,” explained fourth grade teacher Patrick Paralez. “These kits are the perfect tool to demonstrate what’s happening beneath them. It’s a visual demonstration for children to see whats going on in your aquifer, which his part of your water cycle.”
Paralez said the tool will demonstrate with colors how the water is permeating through the ground and how it effects the water cycle.
Teachers can apply for the kits here.
