Apple Grower Brings Taste of the Season to Maple Grove Farmers Market
Fall is apple picking time in Minnesota.
And those looking for a fresh taste of the season can head to the Maple Grove Farmers Market.
That’s where Dayton resident Beth Nash goes to get fresh apples.
“It’s just good to have apples in the fridge. They are so good for you and they taste so good,” said Nash. “There’s nothing like Minnesota apples. You can get apples at the store, but there’s nothing like the Minnesota ones.”
Specifically, she gets her apples from Ron Shimanski’s stand. He’s been bringing his apples to the Maple Grove Farmers Market since it began 20 years ago.
Shimanski said he enjoys treating customers to the wide variety of apples he grows on his Silver Lake, Minnesota farm.
“Customer turnout here is fantastic,” Shimanski said. “They give us plenty of space to expand our market.”
He also appreciates his business partner — his wife, Mitzi.
“We’re so opposite, but probably we both really believe the same way. We are both Christians. We are apple lovers, we both like to work hard.” said Mitzi Shamanski.
Ron Shimanski said all of the summer rainfall made a couple of his apple varieties, Honeycrisp and Ginger Gold, grow particularly large.
The Maple Grove Farmers Market takes place every Thursday starting at 3 p.m. through mid-October.
This year it’s being held at the Church of the Open Door’s parking lot.
