2009 Maple Grove Death Case Results in No Charges
The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office says it found “insufficient evidence” to criminally charge anyone who may have been involved in the 2009 death of 19-year-old Robbie Anderson of Maple Grove.
Anderson died while spending a night with two high school friends at a Maple Grove residence.
Police said they had been drinking prior to Anderson’s death.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office called Anderson’s case a “sudden unexplained death” and the attorney’s office did not file any criminal charges.
However, Anderson’s family hired independent medical examiners to look into the case. His body was exhumed in 2022 and a second autopsy was performed.
The independent medical examiners concluded Anderson’s death was caused by blunt force trauma.
As a result, the Maple Grove Police Department resubmitted the case to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office on Aug. 11, 2023.
A spokesperson for the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office says that five senior attorneys in the Adult Prosecution Division examined the case, reviewing evidence from the independent investigation.
All five of these attorneys “found insufficient evidence and recommended declining to charge the two men who were with Mr. Anderson that night,” the spokesperson said.
No Charges Filed
Prosecutors ultimately declined to file any charges.
“We have deep compassion for Mr. Anderson’s family and the tragic loss of his life,” the spokesperson for the attorney’s office said. “We have devoted significant resources to this case to assess whether any charges are warranted. The independent conclusions of five of the office’s most experienced attorneys were that there is insufficient evidence to support any charges in this case.”
Sandra Cikotte Anderson, Robbie Anderson’s mother, told CCX News she wants another county to review the case.
“Anytime in the future, this case can be charged,” she said. “There is no statute of limitations on murder or manslaughter …We do not believe Hennepin County reviewed Rob’s case fairly or proactively. We believe that have been seeking a way to get out of the mess they created. All smoke and mirrors. I respectfully ask that another county, such as Ramsey, review Rob’s case in order to ensure that it is treated impartially.”
