Diversity Minute 14: Systemic Racism
What is Systemic Racism?
So, what is systemic racism? Think of systems, policies, and laws that privilege some and disadvantage others based on their race.
Segregated neighborhoods serve as an example
Do you ever wonder why neighborhoods tend to be segregated? Is it simply because all the people of color want to live in the same area?
The fact is exclusionary zoning laws and restrictive covenants prohibited the sale of property to Black people and to other racial groups, restricting them to only certain neighborhoods.
Practices such as building highways through neighborhoods to keep communities segregated still continue to this day.
It’s not by accident, it’s by design.
Segregated neighborhoods exist all over the country, and it’s not by accident, it’s by design. This is systemic racism.
