Site Of New Golden Valley Fire Station Down To Four Locations
Golden Valley has narrowed down its search for the site of a new centrally located fire station.
The city council recently decided against acquiring residential homes through the process of eminent domain, instead electing to build the new station on one of four sites.
The proposed sites are:
Spring Gate Shopping Center (the current site of Feist Automotive)
Bassett Creek Office/Medical
MnDOT West Metro Headquarters (Contingent on MnDOT sale/exchange)
Schaper Park Ballfield
“We know who we can approach and that gives us the ability to really explore this project,” said Chief John Crelly, Golden Valley Fire Department. “Now we’re able to work with BKV Group and city staff to do a deeper dive and look at the four sites.”
Fire Station Will Transition To 24/7 Staffing
The Golden Valley Fire Department is in the process of changing from an on-call model to a 24/7 staffing model.
To do that, they’ll need to shut down two of three fire stations and construct a centrally located fire house complete with modern amenities and dorms for firefighters.
“It’s very important that we keep this moving along in a very progressive fashion… that will allow to complete our transition to a 24/7 due crew model utilizing our 50 paid on-call firefighters,” explained Crelly.
The estimated price tag of the new fire station is $17 million.
