Robbinsdale’s New Organics Recyling Drop-Off Site Now Open
Robbinsdale’s new organics recycling drop-off site is now open and available for anyone in the city, but the city is hoping residents of multi-unit buildings will use it as they may not have access to curbside organics recycling.
It’s located at the Robbinsdale Community Garden on Broadway, just south of downtown.
“We’ve had a number of registrations already, and registration is open on the Robbinsdale City website,” said the city’s GreenCorps intern, Gwen Casey, who has helped coordinate the site. “We’re taking registration throughout the rest of the year.”
About 30 people have registered so far, Casey said. The city is offering the first 100 people who sign up a free countertop organics recycling bin and a starter kit of compostable organics recycling bags.
“Fill it with your food scraps. We do recommend you store some of those wet scraps in the fridge or freezer to avoid some of those smells, but whenever you’re ready, take this to the drop-off site,” said Casey.
A grant from Hennepin County helped pave the way for the site to be established.
“(The county funding is) just contributing to the statewide goal of reducing our carbon emissions by reducing food waste and reducing the amount of garbage that goes into our landfills, so this is just one part of that overall goal,” said City of Robbinsdale Sustainability Coordinator Kayla Kirtz.
