The drive to rename the park comes after the city discovered that the Sanborn Holding Company used racial covenants that contained language that denied the occupancy and ownership of a number of properties based on race or descent.
Although the City of Robbinsdale has been working to rename the park since 2024, City Manager Tim Sandvik said the city is looking for more community involvement and feedback before a decision is reached.
“It’s important to get it right and we’re excited for the process,” said Sandvik.
Once the deadline is closed, city staff will review submissions.
“They will be reviewed under sort of the guidelines we’ve stablished with in the Parks, Rec and Forestry division,” said Sandvik. “That whittled-down pile with ultimately make its way to council, and then council will make its decision on next steps for renaming.”
The city is taking name submissions until September 17. If you would like to learn more about submitting a name go here.
Sanborn Park overlooks Crystal Lake and is considered a large park in Robbinsdale.
“We see everything from youth sports to adult activity, leisure, formal, people out picnicking,” said Sandvik. “It’s an amenity to so many, not just in the immediate area.”
