Robbinsdale City Leaders Remind Residents About Smarter Salt Use This Winter
(CITY OF ROBBINSDALE) – Did you know that more salting doesn’t mean more melting? Over-
salting an area can actually reduce the effectiveness of melting ice.

Just a 12-ounce cup of salt is enough to melt up to 1,000 square feet of ice.
Smart salting practices can save you money: When salting, sweep up any excess salt left on your driveway or sidewalk. This means having to buy less salt.
To make sure salt is most effective, keep salt stored in a dry and water-tight area.
One teaspoon of salt is enough to permanently pollute five gallons of water. As a result, our groundwater has higher salt concentrations. The majority of Minnesotans rely on
groundwater for drinking. Using less salt will minimize the negative impacts on our environment and our health.
No salt is safe for pets, wildlife, or the environment. Elevated salt levels in lakes are toxic to the plants and wildlife in them. Pets can also become ill by accidentally or directly
consuming excess salt left on surfaces.
