Registration Open For Brooklyn Park’s Citywide Garage Sales
Last year, 175 sellers took part in Brooklyn Park’s Citywide Garage Sales, a record for the decade-old event.
“It’s a Brooklyn Park institution,” said one of the city’s neighborhood relations specialists, Shanna Woods. “I think our residents love the fact that it’s this recurring event that they can look forward to in May. Folks will make sure they will plan and coordinate with their families around cleaning and storage, and also people anticipate getting ready to be involved with their neighbors and be out and about. Folks are really excited about the time frame.”
Registration for this year’s sales–which are Thursday, May 16-Saturday, May 18–has already begun. City staff are working hard to update GIS mapping software that shows where the sales will be and who is selling what items.
“Folks are also able to categorize and specify what they’re selling,” said Woods. “(Customers) really like being able to sort and seek based on what their interest is and what they’re looking for.”
Interactive With Residents’ Feedback
Woods said the city continues to take feedback from residents about how the sales are run, and even changed the color of the signs that sellers can post to direct customers to their homes based on that feedback.
“Our signs are elevated to be more orange and bright and popping–because the community had spoken out and said our original signs were purple and white and a bit dull, (and) not as easy to recognize on the street,” said Woods.
She mentioned that the sales always garner interest from surrounding communities and the weekend ends up being a chance for so many to connect.
“It’s also a great way for neighbors to get to know each other, build connections, and that actually builds a really meaningful positive experience,” said Woods.
