Off-Broadway Musical Theatre Presents ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’
“They can expect to see a show that is a bit of a classic. It’s something that everyone can enjoy.” That’s what choreographer Aerin O’Malley says about Off-Broadway Musical Theatre’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She adds, “I think that a lot of us grew up with the Joseph film, and see it re-imagined for outdoor theater. There’s fun dancing for the dancers, there’s singing, there’s acting there, there’s bright colors, it’s fun to look at, you can bring the kids, you can bring the family. It’s songs and music that a lot of people grew up with, and if you didn’t grow up with it, then we get to introduce you to it.”
Actor Hawken Paul was introduced to the auditions at the last minute, and ended up landing the lead role, as he says, “I heard about the audition for this production via my roommate Jeffrey, who’s also in the show playing Simian, one of the brothers, and he, I think, showed me the night of, and said hey they’re going to be doing Joseph, I’m going to go audition, do you want to with me? And I was like, yeah, why not. It’s just so much fun, like, they way that it’s set up where each musical number is, or a majority of them are in different musical styles, and it has this vignette-like effect where once we’re done with this number, we move onto now the kind of western, hoe-down kind of section, so it’s constantly changing, and I think that just expect a lot of fun, and that sounds cliche, but this is the musical for it.”
Off-Broadway Musical Theatre’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat opens Thursday, July 21st, and runs Thursday, Friday, Saturday for three weekends. All shows start at 8pm. Admission is free, but a $5 donation is suggested. For more information go to http://www.obmt-newhope.org.
