New Hope Converts Hockey Rinks in Warmer Months to Benefit Dog Owners
During the colder months, ice rinks are the place to be if you’re a hockey player.
But once the ice melts at two New Hope rinks, the spot becomes a haven for dogs.
The City of New Hope transforms its ice rinks at Liberty Park and Lions Park into dog parks in April.
“It’s a way for them to play and also get some socialization with other dogs,” said the city’s Communications Coordinator Beth Kramer. “It’s always fun to watch the dogs playing with one another at our dog parks.”
Kramer says the multi-use space saves the city money.
“We are able to use it year-round without having additional material or costs associated with maybe building a separate park,” she said.
The space gives dog owners like Maddie McGill a little peace of mind.
“It’s wonderful that there’s space where we can let them go without having to worry about them running away,” said McGill. “Just letting them get their energy out. It’s awesome.”
Allowing her to chase after her kids three kids, and not chase after her five-year-old standard poodle Murphy.
“She definitely loves when she gets a chance to run around with other dogs,” said McGill.
The dog park won’t last forever.
In October it will be closed down to make room for the ice to return.
But in the meantime, the New Hope dog parks are open from sunrise to 10:00 p.m. each day.
Kramer recommends making sure your pets are registered and up to date on their vaccinations before they use the dog park to keep it safe for all dogs.
She also reminds dog owners to make sure their pets are leashed once they leave the dog park enclosure.
