Maple Grove To Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day With Rock Your Socks Event
Maple Grove city leaders are bringing back an inclusive and family-friendly event this year to mark World Down syndrome Day on March 21.
The city will host its second-annual Rock Your Socks event at the Maple Grove Community Center on Thursday, March 21 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Inside the gymnasium will be games, food, a bounce house, live music, and even instruments kids can try out.
Prizes for the games are mismatched and whacky socks, and everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite or mismatched socks to celebrate.
Why Socks Help Recognize Down Syndrome
“Basically we want to celebrate and have an inclusive event with the whole community and just celebrate those who have Down syndrome,” said City of Maple Grove Recreation Supervisor Crystal Anderson. She explained that the reason for the socks is that advocates say the karyotype of Down syndrome chromosomes actually looks like mismatched socks.
Recreation Coordinator Luke Kegley is also helping to organize the event, and he said last year many families thanked staff for putting it on.
“We want everyone to know that we want to have events to include everyone and to celebrate everyone who is a part of our community,” said Kegley.
