Maple Grove Community Garden Blossoms in its First Season
Maple Grove’s brand-new community garden has sprung up in what was an outdoor hockey rink at Donahue North Park.
“It is so heartwarming to see all of this. I have wanted a community garden for our city for a while,” said City of Maple Grove Recreation Supervisor Crystal Anderson. “To see it come to fruition and to see how excited everyone was–we had over 100 people sign up for the 40 spots we have, so we do a lottery system–to see how appreciative everyone was to come out and garden was really wonderful to see this year.”
The 40 plots include 22 raised beds–steel-bodied, four-foot-by-twenty-five-foot plots–that are available for those who are maybe not as able-bodied to tend the in-ground plots.
“We have a lot of people who live in apartments or have yards not conducive to having a garden–or they want more space,” said Anderson. “The biggest gardens we have here are 15 by 25. We only have two of those, but that’s quite a bit of space if you’re trying to do it in your yard.”
All of the plots will be available by plot again next spring, Anderson said.
