Golden Valley To Hold Lottery for Second Summer of Medley Park Community Garden Plots
City of Golden Valley leaders hailed the first summer of the Medley Park Community Garden as a success.
“It gave a lot of people the opportunity to garden who normally wouldn’t have that opportunity,” said Recreation Coordinator Maddy Champa. “I think people were pleased overall with what the containers helped them do.”
Forty containers now occupy the rundown tennis courts at Medley Park, and the locked garden gave growers a start on the season during last year’s reluctant spring.
“We actually learned that because they are raised containers, the soil was warmer to begin with. We were able to get a jump start on planting,” said Champa. “They may look small now, but once you put tomatoes and everything in there, there’s a lot of room, until your produce really starts to take off.”
Champa said the city will continue to provide the shared tool shed with supplies and tools for those who may not have–or wish to transport–their own tools. She also said the city will improve the water hose situation by better mounting the hose caddies to the fence that surrounds the garden.
The lottery for the 40 beds will be open for two weeks starting January 9, online here.
Champa said all you need to register is your name and an email address. She is happy to help walk folks through the registration process.
“We don’t want that to be a barrier to put your name in the lottery,” she said.
Once the lottery is over and if there are beds still available, the city will make them available to non-residents to sign up.
