Crystal To Set Prairie Fires in Bassett Creek Park This Spring
The City of Crystal will perform a prescribed burn at least one day this spring in Bassett Creek Park.
“It gets rid of invasive species, and some of the plants that are there need fire in order to grow,” said Recreation Director John Elholm.

The City of Crystal installed prairie grass across a ten-acre swath of Bassett Creek Park five years ago.
The city installed prairie grass across a ten-acre swath of the park about five years ago, Elholm said. It’s mainly around the area of the disc golf course, and adjacent to several homes nearby.
“The burn itself takes less than a day and we will have this part of the park closed off during that,” he said. “It’ll turn into a black look for quite a while until the plants start to grow and it can be used during that stage.”
The exact day won’t be known until perhaps the morning of, since weather conditions have to be just right in order to safely burn, Elholm said.
