Crystal, New Hope, and Robbinsdale Residents Can Register for Summer Recreation Programs at Deep Discount
More families may be able to participate in spring and summer sports programs in three different northwest metro cities after Hennepin County gave a grant to help the cities keep the registration costs lower.
Recreation supervisors from Crystal, New Hope, and Robbinsdale helped secure a $35,000 Hennepin County Youth Sports Registration Grant to be able to offer registration for sports as low as 80% off (the grant will help reimburse the cities for the full cost).
“Fees are barriers for a lot of things, so us being able to remove it for a handful of programs this year and kind of see where we end up at at the end of the year,” said City of Crystal Recreation Services Manager Scott Berggren. “We wanted to make sure we got in on this opportunity to utilize those funds.”
Berggren said the three cities often work together to provide enough teams in sports like basketball, soccer, and flag football to be able to create leagues for the kids to compete with each other over a season.
“We do a lot of cooperative programming together, so hopefully we can increase our registrations and get more kids in our area engaged in youth sports,” he said.
Those interested in registering for sports in Crystal, New Hope, or Robbinsdale can do so now.
“I think we have good value with a lot of our programs,” said Berggren. “I think if we get participants in new to our programs, they see the value in future years when the fee maybe goes up, they’re still wanting to register and be a part of it.”
