Brooklyn Park Re-Naming Its Operations and Maintenance Department as Public Works
The City of Brooklyn Park is in the process of renaming its Operations and Maintenance Department to Public Works. Director Marc Culver said the change went from Public Works to Operations and Maintenance about 30 years ago.
“I’m not really sure why they decided to change the name when they did,” he said. Culver was the city engineer when he was promoted to director last August. “When I started looking through things and I realized ‘public works’ was still referenced in city code and it’s still referenced in the city charter, and also it just brings us in line with so many of our peer communities around the state, and, again, the country.”
Culver said many residents either already call it public works or call or search online looking for Brooklyn Park and public works, so this will help make that public relations aspect easier, too.
The department has more than 80 employees over several divisions covering utilities, streets, parks, vehicle maintenance, and building maintenance.
“I think the name, while it’s somewhat a matter of semantics, it also there’s another element where it gives my maintenance staff and employees within the department a matter of identity so that we can identify with a lot of the resources that are out there for our industry,” said Culver. “It just ties them in closer with that.”
