Brooklyn Center’s Circle Series Highlights Community Wellness
City leaders and community groups in Brooklyn Center are joining forces to address community wellness.
The BC Circle Series is an in-person public forum where residents and business owners can talk about the issues most affecting them.
LaToya Turk, Brooklyn Center Community Prevention, Health and Safety Manager, helped launch the BC Circle Series. She is the first line of contact when a community member wants to hold a meeting.
“The call comes to me, and then we sit down and develop the format, because we want to be respectful of cultural norms when we go into community,” explained Turk. “A BC Circle Series on one side of the town might look different than on the other side of the town.”
Community Members and City Staff Discuss Important Issues
Meetings have taken place at the community center, schools, churches, and even a local barbershop.
“We’ve talked about public safety, we’ve talked about the health and well-being of our residents and our community,” said Turk. “We’ve talked about economics and about access to life-essential resources from housing to transportation.”
In addition to residents and business owners making their voices heard, city staff also helps in advancing the conversation.
“I can’t answer all of the questions, so if we have a BC Circle Series and the question is around policing, our police chief has been involved,” stated Turk. “If it’s around administration, policy and procedure, our city manager has participated.”
All of the BC Circle Series meetings are posted on the city of Brooklyn Center’s calendar.
