Be A Hydrant Hero in Crystal and New Hope to Help West Metro Firefighters
(WEST METRO FIRE-RESCUE DISTRICT) – Every winter there are hundreds of fire hydrants within the West Metro Fire-Rescue District that need to be maintained in order to ensure accessibility in case of fire. If you are a New Hope or Crystal resident and are willing to assist the district in maintaining a hydrant on your property (clearing snow) we invite you to complete the form below and become a Hydrant Hero.
“We know that we have folks out there that are not part of our program or the system, that are already doing a good service to the community, and clearing those hydrants out,” said Lt. Jesus Soto of the fire department. “We want to say thank you to those folks, to start.”

West Metro firefighters ask that Crystal and New Hope residents register to be Hydrant Heroes and help clear fire hydrants of snow and ice this winter.
Lt. Soto said taking care of the hydrants is simple: simple remove snow three feet on all sides around the hydrants, and clear the path between the hydrant and the street so firefighters can better access it.
“If there’s snow covering the entire hydrant, it’s usually been there for a while, and it’s nicely packed with snow and ice, and that’s the real kicker. It means we have to shovel that out, which can take up to five minutes,” said Soto. “If we’re doing that, we’re not putting water on the fire, or more water on the fire, and that’s something that we don’t want.”
