Local Women Hockey Players Train for World Championships
Coming off Olympic gold in February, the USA Women’s hockey team is back together again, training for November’s world championships. Three of the 31 players practicing this week in Blaine played their high school hockey in the northwest suburbs.
Kelly Pannek (Benilde St. Margaret’s ’14), and Grace Zumwinkle (Breck ’17) both won gold medals with the United States Olympic team in February. Sloane Matthews (Wayzata ’22) finished her collegiate career at Ohio State last winter and is one of eight non-Olympians invited to this week’s training camp at the National Sports Center.
The team will also train for a week next month in Michigan and then 25 players will be selected to play in the world championships in Denmark.
