Elk River Edges Maple Grove in Substate Legion Baseball Final

Elk River earned the top seed from Substate 10 in this week’s state American Legion baseball tournament with a 2-1 win over Maple Grove in the substate winner’s bracket final.

Oliver Taynton hit his third homerun in two games for Maple Grove in the first inning before Elk River’s David Mulcahy homered in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1.

Caydn Schrempp’s single in the second inning scored Bennett Masey to give the Elks the lead for good. There was no more scoring the rest of the way as Masey earned a save in relief of starting and winning pitcher Charlie Dahle.

Elk River opens state tournament play Thursday afternoon against Farmington in Sleepy Eye.

Wayzata earned the second state tournament berth from Substate 10, beating Maple Grove. The Wizards won four substate games after a quarterfinal round loss to Elk River.

Wayzata’s first state tournament game is Thursday morning against Owatonna at Riverside Park in Springfield.
