Second Teen Arrested in Brooklyn Park Shooting Death

Authorities have now arrested a second person believed to be connected to the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy at Brooklyn Park’s Hartkopf Park on July 5.

The newest suspect, a 17-year-old male, was taken into custody without incident on July 29 in Peoria, Illinois. The arrest was made by the United States Marshals Service after Brooklyn Park police detectives secured a murder warrant from a Hennepin County judge.

The suspect is currently being held at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center while awaiting extradition back to Minnesota.

The shooting took place late Sunday night, July 5. Brooklyn Park police responded to reports of gunfire at Hartkopf Park, located at 7300 Florida Ave N., at approximately 10:45 p.m. When officers arrived, they discovered a 16-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite immediate attempts by officers to administer lifesaving measures, the victim died.

A Brooklyn Park Police K9 unit searched Hartkopf Park on July 6.

On July 8, Brooklyn Park Police arrested a 17-year-old male on probable cause of second-degree murder. Investigators also announced they recovered a gun believed to have been used in the shooting.

Police have not yet released the identity of the 16-year-old victim or commented on a potential motive for the shooting. The investigation remains active.
