Sandy Hook Mom Visits Plymouth for School Safety Summit
Educators joined first responders on Monday in Plymouth for the Midwest School Safety Summit.
Michele Gay, who lost her youngest daughter in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, spoke at the event.
“It’s really about honoring her in helping other communities do better, gather together on a beautiful blue-sky day like we are having here in Plymouth, and think about these things ahead of time,” Gay said. “And think about how we can do our best for our schools and communities.”
Gay co-founded Safe and Sound Schools, which organized the summit.
She said the event was designed to bring community members together around the idea of protecting students.
Plymouth police helped bring the event to the city. The summit drew more than 100 people from different disciplines, including first responders and educators.
Plymouth Public Safety Director Erik Fadden said he hopes events like this help community leaders connect before any tragedy occurs.
“I hope this extends the mission of keeping our schools and our community safer,” Fadden said.
The summit runs for two days, on Tuesday and Wednesday.
