Sandburg Middle School in Golden Valley Cancels Classes Friday, Cites High Temperatures
Note: Post was edited Friday afternoon to include the district’s explanation for high temperatures in Sandburg Middle.
The first week of school was cut short for students at Sandburg Middle School. The district opted to cancel classes for Friday, Sep. 4, citing high temperatures and an abundance of caution.
Sandburg, which is located in Golden Valley, has students in grades 6-8. Community members shared concerns about high temperatures on social media. A district representative said parts for the HVAC system were delayed, and more problems arose when the chiller pump was installed in the system. The HVAC system is now up and running. The air conditioning was turned on on Friday, Sep. 4.
The district said in a message sent to families that with predicted temperatures, they opted to close classes for the day. The Basement, Sandburg Middle School’s care program, was still underway. Students were asked to bring a water bottle and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. All other after-school activities were canceled.
“Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we keep student and staff safety a priority,” the district said in its statement.
The Robbinsdale School District began classes this week, some beginning on Monday, Aug. 31, and others Tuesday, Sep. 1.
