No-Wake Restriction In Effect on Medicine Lake Due to High Water
The cities of Plymouth and Medicine Lake issued a no-wake restriction for boaters and watercraft riders beginning July 1. It’s likely to remain in effect for the July 4 holiday.
The notice is posted at the public access boat launch and asks boaters not to exceed five miles per hour on the lake.
Recent heavy rainfall caused high water levels. Water Resource Supervisor Ben Scharenbroich said the no-wake ordinance is designed to help protect the shoreline.
“We have a lot of properties, especially in Medicine Lake and along the shoreline, that is susceptible to erosion. And so, when we have higher water levels on boats on the lake, having that wake is going to erode the shoreline a lot faster than it normally would when the lake is at a lower level,” Scharenbroich said.
That order will stay in effect until the lake’s water levels decrease. It will need to remain below a high-water mark of 889.4 feet for three consecutive days.
That means water levels would have had to drop on July 1 for the order to be lifted for the Fourth of July holiday.
