Newsmakers: Gus Macker Basketball Tournament Returning in Brooklyn Park

An annual family-focused three-on-three outdoor basketball tournament is returning to the Twin Cities in August.

Players age eight and up can take part in the Twin Cities Gus Macker Basketball Tournament at North Hennepin Community College.

The tournament, hosted by Minneapolis Northwest Tourism, benefits local nonprofits.

“It is the time where people that love basketball can come out and play — play with their friends, play with their peers, and really enjoy the sport all outdoors,” said Leslie Wright, CEO of Minneapolis Northwest Tourism.

It’s the 52nd anniversary of the tournament, and the third year the tournament’s been held in the Brooklyn Park area.

Last year, the tournament brought in nearly $30,000 for community non-profits, according to Wright. A total of 173 teams played, and they’re hoping to have more this year.

Teams of four interested in playing should sign up by July 27. 2026. The tournament is three-on-three, but four players are needed so teammates can sub in.

The cost for a team to register is $200.

Nonprofits and businesses can also sign up to sponsor and volunteer at the event.

There are a variety of activities available aside from the basketball games.

ACER is also hosting a family fun day, along with a mascot game on Saturday, August 15. NextGen Legacy will host a classic car show on Sunday, August 16.

Gameplay will occur all day both days.

There will also be food trucks and hot dogs fried by the Lion’s Club.
