New Liberian Restaurant Offers West African Flavors in Brooklyn Center

A new family-owned restaurant is bringing a taste of Liberia and a place for people to connect in Brooklyn Center.

Carol’s African Restaurant opened its doors in May. Since then, co-owner Daniel Killen has seen an influx of traffic. He says it’s become a community gathering spot where people meet up with friends, and even meet new friends.

“This is a business, but we’re in this to really reach out to the community so they can have a place to trust, and a place to come, and a place to have refuge when they want to have a good meal,” Killen said.

Carol’s serves West African dishes, primarily Liberian cuisine, which includes dishes like dried rice or jollof rice with fish or chicken. Killen said a popular item is their ginger juice made in-house.

Jamecar Killen showcases a variety of dishes available at Carol’s African Restaurant.

The restaurant is named after Caroline, Daniel Killen’s mother-in-law. Caroline, along with her daughters Jane and Jamecar, started serving food through their catering business 19 years ago. They’ve come a long way since then. Killen said the name reflects Carol’s spirit and the restaurant’s mission.

“Sort of an embodiment of a mother who is getting her girls out the door, into the world. Teaching them everything she knows about culinary arts. How to be a good person, how to be an amazing resource to the community, and to pour yourself out with love,” Killen said.

All three of them work in the kitchen.

Carol’s African Restaurant is located at 6940 Brooklyn Boulevard in Brooklyn Center.
