Maple Grove Roundtable Tackles Gun Violence Prevention Ahead of School Shooting Anniversary
As the community approaches the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, local gun violence prevention advocates, medical professionals and community members gathered at the Maple Grove Library for a roundtable discussion aimed at averting future tragedies.
The event on Monday, July 20, hosted by the nonprofit Protect Minnesota, outlined the progress made over the past year while confronting the staggering reality of gun violence in the state.
According to Maggiy Emery, executive director of Protect Minnesota, the state loses between 500 and 600 residents to gun violence every year.
“Every single one of those deaths is preventable,” Emery said during the panel. “And there are proven policies, tactics, strategies and community-led solutions that work that we can implement here to save lives.”
Legislation Stalls, But Front-Line Interventions Step Up
While Emery noted that recent gun reform legislation stalled in the Minnesota House, medical professionals emphasized that crucial, immediate intervention is happening on the front lines.
Dr. Rachel Weigert, a pediatric emergency physician at Children’s Minnesota, revealed a major shift in how local hospitals handle patient intakes. In the last month, both of the network’s emergency departments began screening every single family for firearm exposure.
If a family indicates they have access to firearms, hospitals provide free safety equipment.
“In the last month, we’ve given out 32 cable locks and lock boxes,” Dr. Weigert said. “And that might sound like a really small number, but the way I think of it is that’s a 2-year-old who now can’t get a handle on a handgun in the bedside drawer, or a teenager who had a fight with their girlfriend and now can’t just go grab that firearm and do something catastrophic in a moment’s notice.”
Dr. Weigert stressed that those 32 locks represent 32 potential lives saved from impulse decisions or accidental discharges.

A keyed trigger lock was on display during the roundtable discussion. A keyed trigger lock is a two-piece mechanism that clamps securely over a firearm’s trigger guard, mechanically blocking the trigger from being pulled.
A Growing Burden of Survivorship
The discussion also highlighted a sobering statistic regarding the long-term aftermath of school shootings. Advocates from Protect Minnesota shared that per capita, Minnesota is home to 15 percent of all living school shooting survivors in the United States.
In light of this statistic, organization leaders urged lawmakers to treat survivor recovery not just as an immediate aftermath response, but as a long-term, institutional responsibility.
