UPDATE: Maple Grove Fire Chief Resigns After Criminal Sexual Conduct Charges

Maple Grove Fire Chief Maddison Zikmund has resigned after being charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

According to a city press release, his resignation went into effect on July 16.

Zikmund, 36, has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

He was hired as chief last year.

According to the criminal complaint:

The alleged assault occurred in spring 2017.

Zikmund was a firefighter with the Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department and supervised the department’s Fire Explorer program.

The victim joined the Explorer program and met Zikmund when she was 16 years old. Zikmund and the victim began talking by text message, Snapchat and Instagram. 

Those conversations became increasingly sexually explicit with Zikmund requesting nude photos of the victim, the complaint said.

When the victim was 17 years old, Zikmund invited her to his home, where he sexually assaulted her.

The victim reported the abuse to police in June 2026.

On July 1, Zikmund met with an investigator from the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and admitted to exchanging nude photographs with the victim.

He also admitted to inappropriately touching the victim, telling investigators “I know this was wrong.”

The city of Maple Grove issued the following statement on Zikmund:

“Fire Chief Maddison Zikmund has resigned his position with the City of Maple Grove effective July 16, 2026.

Earlier this month, when the city became aware of a criminal investigation involving alleged conduct that occurred while Zikmund was employed by another department, he was immediately placed on administrative leave. A criminal charge has since been filed in that matter.

Acting Fire Chief Bill Abderhalden is overseeing day-to-day operations of the department, and emergency response services continue without interruption. The City of Maple Grove is requesting council approval to recruit for the position on the July 20 City Council agenda.”
