Maple Grove Approves Large-Scale Dick’s House of Sport Development
A new destination Dick’s House of Sport store received the go ahead by the Maple Grove City Council at Monday night’s meeting, allowing the large-scale project to proceed.
The proposed Dick’s House of Sport would be a two-story, 100,000-square-foot building at the northeast corner of Maple Grove Parkway and 99th Avenue, just south of Highway 610 across from an existing Target store.
“Similar to what you see at Ridgedale, but actually bigger,” said Joe Hogeboom, Maple Grove’s community and economic development director, referring to the Dick’s House of Sport built in Minnetonka.
The new store would be a regional destination to the growing northwest metro area with easy access off Interstate 94. Planning officials have stated it would be “one of the more significant retail developments the city has seen in a number of years.”
The site was previously approved for a Hy-Vee grocery store in 2017, but that project was nixed.
According to Hector Viñas, president of OneCorp Real Estate Group, it would take about one year to complete construction of the store.
“It’s complex construction,” said Viñas at the Sept. 21 meeting. “They do a lot of stuff inside with the climbing walls and everything.”
The Dick’s House of Sport would include a multipurpose outdoor turf field used for a variety of sports in the summer and converted into an ice-skating rink in the winter. A 20,000-square-foot Golf Galaxy store, which is owned by Dick’s Sporting Goods, would also be built next to Dick’s House of Sport.
7 Brew and Chick-fil-A Plans
To the west of Dick’s House of Sport, separated by parking, three smaller buildings would get built. They are slated to be a Valvoline Instant Oil Change, a Chick-fil-A and a 7 Brew drive-through coffee shop.
Viñas said these businesses are expected to be ready before the Dick’s House of Sport with the 7 Brew opening first.
Maple Grove planning officials are expecting significant traffic in the first month of opening.
“When 7 Brews open, they tend to have very very high traffic demand at first,” said Peter Vickerman, planning manager with Maple Grove. “This is going to be a high demand location right next to the high school.”
The development would have three access points for vehicle traffic off 99th Avenue.
Construction work is expected to start in the spring.
